Until
the day break, and the shadows flee away,
I will get me to the mountain of myrrh,
and to the hill of frankincense.
(Song of Solomon 4:6)
Aromatherapy
is the therapeutic use of highly concentrated, pure essential oils
from plants and herbs through topical application or inhalation.
Essential Oils are extracted from woody parts of plants, seeds,
herbs, flowers and are called "essential", because the
purest essence of the flower or plant is distilled.
Although
the term "aromatherapy" came to use in 1930, aromatherapy
dates back to 4000 B.C, when the early civilizations began burning
fragrant plants in their religious rituals.
Essential
oils affect the olfactory centers of the brain and the nervous system.
Once they enter the lymphatic system, they are are carried to the
liver and into the blood stream, which induces sedation, stimulation,
or other properties of a given oil.
There
are approximately 300 essential oils available and some are more popular
than others. All of them have different scent and properties. General
rule is, that all essential oils are stimulant in small and sedative
in large amounts. Essential oils are not water soluble, but they dissolve
well in fats. In mixtures, always use maximum 3 different essential
oils and keep recommended concentration to avoid irritation.
You
can consult the ESSENTIAL OILS CHART at
the end of this article to find the recommended essential oil(s) for
a particular problem you're having.

SAFETY
INFORMATION
*
Always
use high quality pure essential oils - avoid non-brand name
essential oils. Cheap types are synthetic or diluted. Typical synthetic
oils (also called fragrance oils) often bear names: cherry, cocnut,
plum, caramel, violet, apple etc. Don´t use them in aromatherapy.
*Never
apply undiluted oils to the skin - essential oils are skin sensitizers,
many of them are irritants and a few are toxic.
*Essential
oils are extremely strong - use sparely, always start only with
1 or 2 drops and then add more when necessary.
*Essential
oils are flammable.
*Don´t
take oils internally - it´s possible to use some of the
oils internally for therapeutic use, but I recommend that you consult
a professional herbalist/aromatherapist before you start to experiment.
*Don´t
use during first three months of pregnancy, then only with special
caution and after consultation.
*Don´t use if you suffer from epilepsy, use with caution
in case of high or low blood pressure and serious illnesses.
*Aromatherapy is a complement for medical treatment, not its replacement.
*Keep oils out of reach of children and pets.
*Keep oils in dark, dry place, tightly closed, away from direct
sunlight and heat - citrus oils last for 1 - 1.5 years, others
approx. 3 years.

Base (or carrier oils)
Essential
oils cannot be applied on skin undiluted, therefore base or carrier
oils are used for blending to protect skin from irritation or inflamation.
The
most popular are sweet almond oil (for dry, sensitive skin), sunflower,
apricot, hazelnut and grapeseed oil (neutral), sesame oil (for dry
skin), linseed and yoyoba oil (for combination or oily skin). Avocado,
wheatgerm and olive oils are thick and heavy, but extremely rich
in vitamins, therefore are recommended when blended with lighter
base oils.
You
can also use neutral natural creams or lotions as carriers, or natural
thick oils with creamy texture (shea butter).
Always
use high quality, unrefined oils bought in companies offering other
aromatherapy products, this way the quality is assured.
Essential oils - tips on use and concentration
Bath - dilute 5 - 8 drops in a cup of milk, or teaspoon of
honey or salt, mix well and pour into running water. You shouldn´t
perspire in bath in order to benefit from essential oils, so don´t
use very hot water. For the most effective therapeutic use, don´t
use soap and don´t shower after the bath so the molecules
of oils can penetrate the skin well.
Refreshing
spray - add 3 - 5 drops of essential oil to a cup of spring
water, pour into dark container with spray pump. Shake well before
each use.
Use to refresh your skin, as a room freshener, or spray on linens
before ironing.
Massage
oils - 1- 2 drops of esential oil added to one teaspoon of a
base (carrier) oil, mix well before use.
Inhalation
- 3 - 5 drops added into a glass or stainless steel bowl filled
with boiling water. With a towel over your head, breathe deeply
for 10 minutes. During the inhalation, keep your eyes closed to
avoid irritation.
Compresses
- hot compresses are used to reduce chronic pain (rheuma), cold
compresses are used for acute pain (headaches). Add 3 drops of an
essential oil to a basin filled with hot or cold water ( 2 cups
are enough), soak small towel in the water, squeeze out the excess
water and apply to the skin. Leave on the skin till the towel reaches
body temperature and repeat the process.
Other tips:
*use
aroma lamp at home or office (6 - 8 drops to water container on
the top)
*add a few drops on paper handkerchief and inhale
*pour a few drops on your pillow for good sleep (lavender)
*sprinkle a few drops on pot pourri or cotton ball and put to closets
*fill basin with a small amount of water, add a few drops of oil,
leave till morning to aromatize your kitchen or bathroom (mint,
rosemary, lavender and citrus oils are one of the best aromatizers)
*make your own aromatherapy cosmetics - add 5 drops to a neutral
natural cream (approx. 50 ml / 1.7 ounces container) and mix well,
add 5 drops to a teaspoon of a shampoo, mix well and use as usually.
